Congratulations on your new tattoo! We are honored that you trusted CALABERAS with your body art, and want to ensure that it heals beautifully and retains its vibrancy for years to come. Proper aftercare is a critical part of the tattoo process, as it not only protects your skin during the healing phase but also preserves the integrity of the artwork.

Please read these detailed instructions carefully, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Your commitment to proper aftercare will ensure that your tattoo becomes the lasting masterpiece it was designed to be.

STEP 1: Immediately After Your Tattoo

  1. Leave the first bandage on for 24-48 hours:

    • This first application acts as a protective seal, preventing bacteria, dirt, and external irritants from reaching your fresh tattoo.

    • During this time it’s normal to see fluid buildup under the bandage. This mixture of plasma, ink, and lymphatic fluid is part of the healing process. However, if the bandage becomes excessively full or begins to leak, it should be removed earlier than planned.

  2. Avoid excessive movement or stretching of the tattooed area to prevent bandage from peeling prematurely.

  3. Are you allergic to the bandage?:

    • Although this is rare, if you feel a burning sensation or itchiness from the bandage, this could be a sign of an allergic reaction to the adhesive. If this is something that you do experience, please remove the bandage immediately and contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional.

STEP 2: Removing the first bandage

  1. Remove the bandage in the shower with warm water:

    • Take a warm shower to soften the adhesive. Let the water run over the bandage for a few minutes before removing it.

    • Begin peeling from a corner, and gently pull the bandage back at a 45° angle along your skin. Avoid pulling upward as this can cause discomfort.

  2. Clean the tattoo immediately:

    • After removing the bandage, wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented antibacterial soap (we recommend Dial Gold).

    • Use only your hands to gently clean the area. Do not use washcloths, loofahs, or abrasive materials. This helps remove any residual plasma or adhesive while preventing irritation.

  3. Dry the area thoroughly:

    • Pat the tattoo dry with a clean, disposable paper towel or allow it to air dry. Avoid using fabric towels as they can harbor bacteria and cause irritation or infection.

STEP 3: Applying a Second Bandage (Optional)

Follow these instructions if you are applying a second bandage on your tattoo. If you are not applying second bandage, skip to STEP 4.

  1. Apply a second bandage for extended protection:

    • If you prefer a more hands-off approach to healing, we recommend coming back in for a second bandage to be applied to your tattoo.  Please let your tattoo artist know ahead of time if you are interested. There will be an additional charge for this service.

  2. Leave the second bandage on for up to 5 to 7 days:

    • During this time, avoid heavy, sweating, soaking in water (baths, pools, hot tubs), or activities that might loosen the bandage.

    • If fluid accumulates or the bandage begins to peel, remove it sooner and transition to STEP 4.

  3. After 5-7 days remove the second bandage:

    • After 5-7 days, remove the bandage following the instructions in STEP 2.

STEP 4: After the Final Bandage is Removed

Once the final bandage is off (or first bandage if skipping STEP 3), your tattoo will begin to peel and heal naturally. Switch to the traditional aftercare instructions bellow to care for your tattoo:

  1. Clean the tattoo daily:

    • Wash the tattoo gently once or twice a day with lukewarm water and mild, unscented antibacterial soap. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

  2. Moisturize the tattoo lightly:

    • Use a thin layer of fragrance-free, tattoo-safe moisturizer (e.g., Aquaphor, Lubriderm, or Hustle Butter). Avoid over-moisturizing, as it can suffocate the skin and clog pores.

WHAT TO AVOID

Please avoid the following during the healing process:

  1. No soaking:

    • Avoid baths, pools, hot tubs, and any prolonged exposure to water until the tattoo is fully healed (about 3-4 weeks). Showers are fine, but keep the tattoo out of direct water spray.

  2. Avoid direct sunlight:

    • Keep the tattoo covered from the sun while healing. After healing always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect the tattoo and prevent fading.

  3. Do not scratch or pick:

    • Itching, peeling, and light scabbing are normal parts of the healing process. Resist the urge to scratch or pick at your tattoo, as this can damage the artwork and increase the risk of infection.

  4. No tight clothing:

    • Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent friction and irritation over the tattooed area.

SIGNS OF A PROBLEM

Contact your tattoo artist, the studio, or a medical professional if you notice any of the following:

  • Excessive redness, swelling, or warmth around the tattoo.

  • Unusual discharge, such as thick yellow or green pus.

  • Persistent or worsening pain after the first few days.

By following these steps, you’ll ensure that your tattoo heals properly, retains its vibrancy, and remains a stunning piece of art for years to come. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your tattoo artist or the studio for guidance.
